Books in 2013 - Part 2

Alcatel-Lucent's President of Bell Labs and CTO, Marcus Weldon, on the history and future of Bell Labs, and titles for Christmas; Steve Alexander, CTO of Ciena, on underdogs, connectedness, and deep-sea diving; and Dave Welch, President of Infinera on how people think, and an extraordinary WWII tale: the second part of Books 2013.

David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell

I’ve enjoyed some of Gladwell’s earlier works such as The Tipping Point and Outliers: The Story of Success. You often have to read his material with a bit of a skeptic's eye since he usually deals with people and events that are at least a standard deviation or two away from whatever is usually termed “normal.”

Ciena and partners build SDN testbed for carriers

Ciena, working with partners, is building a network to enable the development of software-defined networking (SDN) applied to the wide area network (WAN). The motivation in creating the testbed network is to boost carrier confidence in SDN while aiding its development.

"When you get very serious vice presidents in tier-one carriers saying, 'This [SDN] is the biggest change in my career', there is something to it."

Chris Janz, Ciena

Apps over packet-optical: Ciena boosts 6500's packet handling

Source: Ciena

Ciena has enhanced its packet-optical equipment portfolio by adding packet support to its flagship 6500 platform.

Cards and software from Ciena's established Carrier Ethernet packet platforms have been added to the 6500, a packet-optical platform that features reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexing (ROADM), WaveLogic3 coherent transponders, Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching and SONET/SDH aggregation.

Merits and challenges of optical transmission at 64 Gbaud

u2t Photonics announced recently a balanced detector that supports 64Gbaud. This promises coherent transmission systems with double the data rate. But even if the remaining components - the modulator and DSP-ASIC capable of operating at 64Gbaud - were available, would such an approach make sense?

Gazettabyte asked system vendors Transmode and Ciena for their views.

Optical transmission's era of rapid capacity growth

Kim Roberts, senior director coherent systems at Ciena, moves from theory to practice with a discussion of practical optical transmission systems supporting 100Gbps, and in future, 400 Gigabit and 1 Terabit line rates. This discussion is based on a talk Roberts gave at the Layer123's Terabit Optical and Data Networking conference held in Cannes recently.

Part 2: Commercial systems

The industry is experiencing a period of rapid growth in optical transmission capacity. The years 1995 till 2006 were marked by a gradual increase in system capacity with the move to 10 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) wavelengths.  But the pace picked up with the advent of first 40Gbps direct detection and then coherent transmission, as shown by the red curve in the chart.
