Transmode chooses coherent for 100 Gigabit metro

Transmode has detailed its 100 Gigabit metro strategy based on a stackable rack, a concept borrowed from the datacom world.

The Swedish system vendor has adopted coherent detection technology for 100 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) optical transmission, unlike other recent metro announcements from ADVA Optical Networking and MultiPhy based on 100Gbps direct-detection.

"Metro is a little bit diverse. You see different requirements that you have to adapt to."

MultiPhy boosts 100 Gig direct-detection using digital signal processing

MultiPhy has detailed its 100 Gigabit direct-detection receiver IC for use in a pluggable CFP optical module addressing the metro market.

The MP1100Q chip is being aimed at two cost-conscious metro networking requirements: 100 Gigabit point-to-point links and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) metro networks.

High fives: 5 Terabit OTN switching and 500 Gig super-channels.

Infinera has announced a core network platform that combines Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching with dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transport. "We are looking at a system that integrates two layers of the network," says Mike Capuano, vice president of corporate marketing at Infinera.

"This is 100Tbps of non-blocking switching, all functioning as one system. You just can't do that with merchant silicon."

Mike Capuano, Infinera

100 Gigabit for the metro

ADVA Optical Networking has launched a 100 Gigabit transmission card designed for metro wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) applications.

The firm claims this is an industry first: a direct-detection-based 100 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) design using four, 28Gbps channels rather than current 10x10Gbps schemes.

"Data centre operators want to make best use of the fibre insfrastructure and get lower overall cost, footprint and power consumption"

Jörg-Peter Elbers, ADVA Optical Networking

100 Gig: Is market expectation in need of a reality check?

Recent market research suggests that the 100 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) era is fast-approaching and that 100Gbps promises to leave the 40Gbps market opportunity in its wake.

“It could easily be ten to 15 years before we see 100Gbps in a big way on the public network side”

Mark Lutkowitz, Telecom Pragmatics

OTN hardware gets the 100 Gigabit treatment

AppliedMicro’s TPACK unit has unveiled the first of its 100 Gigabit Optical Transport Network (OTN) designs. Two devices were announced in November 2010 - the TPOT414 and TPOT424 - that perform 100 Gigabit mapping and framing functions, while in December a 100 Gigabit OTN muxponder (multiplexer-transponder) was announced that combines several of its designs.

“The real market demand is for simple systems - the transponder and interfaces to the routers"

Lars Pedersen, AppliedMicro

MultiPhy eyes 40 and 100 Gigabit direct-detect and coherent schemes

Visiting Israeli start-up MultiPhy at its office in Ness Ziona, near Rehovot, involves dancing around boxes. “We are about to move,” apologises Ronen Weinberg, director of product management at MultiPhy. But the company will not have to travel far. It is crossing buildings in the same Ness Ziona Science Park, moving in next to Finisar’s Israeli headquarters.
